Gothic & Baroque Churches in Naples
When You book a guided tour Tours in Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Sorrento, with us You'll realize how beautiful and magic area is.
The Angevin dynasty settled in Naples in 1266. This was possible thanks to the help of the papacy, eager to strengthen its power in the struggle between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. The Angevin moved the capital from Palermo to Naples and the construction of so many churches in Naples represented a symbolic alliance between the king and the Pope. The city of Naples became a huge construction site that attracted artists of all kinds from all over Europe. With the arrival of Anjou in Naples, the Gothic style makes its entry into the city. The reign of Robert of Anjou was particularly marked by the flowering of art and culture. At the court of that king came thescholar Petrarch, the painters Pietro Cavallini, sinome Martini, Giotto, sculptors like Tino Camaino.
Since the thirties of the seventeenth century, the powers - the Roman Church, triumphant on heresy, the absolute monarchies of Europe - are beginning to entrust the representation of their greatness to the baroque. All the techniques are put to the service of art as a tool of persuasion, propaganda, representation: architecture, sculpture, painting, music come together for a great theater show. In Naples, the Baroque is different mainly because it relies on a particular taste for decoration, for the use of colored materials in architecture and sculpture. In the architecture of the Neapolitan baroque artists seek effects of contrast between white walls and cornices, columns in gray volcanic stone and inlaid colored marble.

In the Baroque era, why were the colors of the keys reversed?
In the Baroque Era of music, why were the current white keys black, and the current black keys white on the piano-like instruments (like harpsichords)?
Keys were typically covered in contrasting shades of wood. The reason that the colors are "reversed" is all about practicality.
I don't believe the keys were actually white over black, but probably something more like white oak over dark cherry. The darker wood being easier to cut into thin slices for the naturals and the lighter colored wood, being denser working better for the accidentals.
Certainly the "Ebony and Ivory" of pianos worked out that way. Ivory (Elephant or Walrus tusk) has very fine grain and is easily sliced in to thin uniform sheets while Ebony or Iron wood is very dense close grained heart wood that is very difficult to work. It is certainly more easily cut into the shape of the accidentals than it is to the thick veneers used to cover the naturals.
